Leith,
I have about 60 100Mb zip disks - some at least 7 years old. Most were
originally IBM formatted, and I reformatted them as Mac (with iomega
tools utility). No problems so far. Others I just left formatted as IBM
since the Mac can read and write to them anyway. My wife uses a PC and
this way we can share files cross-platform. No problems there either.
I'm glad I didn't know that there was a controversy!
