Just to be a historical stick-in-the-mud ;): The initial SEs and Mac II had
the 800 K drives. It was only with the introduction of the "x" series of Mac
IIs that Apple started offering the FDHD drives with its computers and gave
the SE a minor upgrade to the SE FDHD (I can't remember if they offered an
upgrade path for the SE to the SE FDHD but I imagine they did... there was
a path from the SE to the SE/30 and from the II to the IIx).

Re: floppies on Mac OS X (not sure if you're an OS X user but thought I'd
throw this in).

USB floppy drives can be rather sticky. Some are supported by OS X, others
are not. You should research your USB floppy drive to ensure that it does
what you want. Some are incapable of formatting/reading DOS floppies under
Mac OS X, some don't work period, while others are fully supported by OS X
(1.4 MB HFS floppies (MFS hasn't been supported by Mac OS for a number of OS
versions now & I think 800 K support has been dropped too), DOS 1.4 MB
floppies).
