[muglo] Re: Firewire Transfer of Files

One other thought I had... get yourself a USB "key chain" drive. It
automagically mounts on all Mac OSes that support USB (8.6 with the
appropriate Apple extensions even does it) and they're pretty cheap!!! I've
seen 64 MB for ~$50 and 128 MB for not that much more ($60?). This is a
handy little piece of hardware to have kicking around -- a lot lessy wieldy
than a burnt CD or REALLY, REALLY expensive ZIP.

Now that I think of it... I predict that ZIPs will die pretty soon. Once 128
MB keychains start hitting the $30 or $40 mark (probably by next summer) I
wouldn't be surprised to see ZIPs virtually disappear. They're that much
more convenient than a ZIP since you can pop the equivalent of a 100 MB ZIP
in a pocket.

PS #2 If you have any Compact Flash, SD media, etc. (any flash memory)
hanging around, get yourself a flash-media reader for $20 or $30. You can
then use your flash memory to transfer files from the one computer to the
other (and you have a reader for your media).

... or #3, if you have a camera that works on both computers you could use
the camera to transfer the files (my camera with a 256 MB Compact Flash can
hold about 240 MB of data files... (I use it as a back-up of my writing...
an extra 6 MB of .sitx files won't make a difference ;)).

PS #3 in case OS X users haven't discovered this format... .sitx is
*extremely* efficient. I can compress files with 90+% savings (vs. 50-60%
for .sit or .zip). I've never seen a compression format that can compress
JPEGs. What's really impressive is to see 10 MB of fairly dense data files
compressed down to 428 K (which suggests to me there are some patterns in
the data that we're missing...)

Eric.
