[muglo] Re: Firewire Transfer of Files

Well, I have a question for you: why do you have a FireWire card in the
Performa? For a HD? ;) (probably not b/c otherwise you wouldn't be asking
this question of us).

Could you borrow a FireWire or USB drive from someone?

Options:
1. Since your 6400/200 has two PCI slots
(http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=112369) you can get any
10BaseT ethernet card that is supported by Mac OS for $20 or $30 -- Terry's
Tech Service (519-294-0648) would be able to help you.

2. Yes, you could also install an ethernet card into the "Comm" slot if you
can find such a 10BaseT card.

3. It may be possible to do a USB->USB transfer. I don't know for sure
whether this is possible.

4. A USB-Ethernet adapter may work on your 6400/200 as well.

5. You could take the HD out of your 6400/200 and "slave" it to the drive in
the iMac (I'd rather get myself a FireWire HD instead ;).

6. You can use the modems to transfer files!!! This will take a while, but
if it's a one-time only event it may be worth trying. Get ZTerm for both
your computers (there is now an OS X version). Connect the modems with a
regular phone cable. Type ATX1D and press enter on the one and ATA on the
other. You will have to experiment with the order in which you issue the
commands. Sometimes I find I have to issue ATA first, sometimes second. The
computers will connect and you can then transfer files using something like
XModem, YModem or ZModem (experiment -- some protocols work better than
others).

It transfers at 33.6K but, if it's a one-time event it may save you from
having to invest in hardware for a (now defunct) 6400/200. Plus, it might be
a good thing to know if you ever have to transfer data from a 386 to a G3
(like I had to do not too long ago to be able to read a file from a 9 year
old computer that didn't even know what the internet was).

PS If you're going to go to the expense of getting a USB ZIP perhaps you
could get one of the smaller FireWire HDs instead... it'll be in the same
ball park for expense and offer you high-speed, convenient back-up.

Eric.
