The drive needs to be connected to a computer with a suitable drive
to read the OS CD's.
When the OS install begins, designate the External drive as the drive
to install on to.
It's a good idea, as I proved to myself recently to have a second
functioning installation. In my case, however, the computer is new to
the house and it just hadn't been done yet.
Your grand-daughter would be better off doing the OS install, but
moving stuff off the internal drive and continuing to use the
internal drive as her boot drive.
