Thanks to all who offered help to this problem. The printer works again. The crucial step was to re-install the system and, using "Customize", to re-install the system Epson Drivers. After rebooting, I found that I could re-install the driver from the Epson disk (and also EasyPrint) without getting any error messages or references to the need for some higher authority's permission. I still don't know what the problem was but assume that the drivers and possibly some system-related files were corrupted.
