Ugh. @##$!#!# XD/SD/whatever format. The only one that I consider (IMNSHO)
worthwhile is the CompactFlash (I and II). (unfortunately my current camera
uses those horrid little things called XD ($$$ (you pay the same for 128 MB
XD as for 256 MB CF and CF is far more widespread), small physically,
pitiful storage capacity)... even my hands have problems with such tiny
pieces of plastic)
All the other formats suffer from three things that turn me off them:
1. $$$ - they're all expensive (vs. CompactFlash);
2. size - they're all damned small. Little can be gained by reducing 20 g to
15 g unless you want a _really_ small camera anyway and have small enough
hands to use one (I certainly don't have "mits" and I despise little
cameras); and,
3. storage capacity - CompactFlash seems to be the only format available in
larger storage capacities (especially above 256 MB and ESPECIALLY
affordable). You can get CompactFlash II microdrives (hard drives) that go
up to 4 GB! Other formats can't do that (yet) and you can get 512 MB without
a sweat (which is a _very_ hard thing to do in any other format and if
you've got a 4 MP or higher camera 512 MB is the minimum so as not to
constantly be swapping out cards or switching to a lower resolution shooting
mode (the way I take pictures - with the shutter button held down)).
PS CompactFlash is one of the most widespread formats out there and there
seems to be a resurgence in its popularity (I think partly because it is a
size (physically) that appeals to people because anyone with larger hands or
arthritis actually has a chance of being able to manipulate it (and, they're
not as easy to lose as the really tiny formats).
Eric.
