[muglo] Re: Digital Cameras

Hi Tee, just thought I'd throw in a few more cents worth of unsolicited
opinion :)

Re: still using a 16 MB card

You can pick up extra xD memory cards for very few $$. For $30 or $40 you
should be able to pick up a 64 MB card, and for under $100 you should (by
now) be able to get a 256 MB card (I got 256 MB Lexar CompactFlash for $90
in August). If you want/could use extra 16 or 32 MB cards you can probably
get them for $10 or $20 ("used", perhaps on eBay), especially if you find
someone else who uses xD cards and has upgraded to a larger size (I keep the
16 MB card the camera came with around as an emergency back-up and will
ditch it if I ever see a 64 or 128 MB card being sold for a song in my
travels).

On a 256 MB CompactFlash (240 MB formatted) I can store 275 high-quality 3.2
megapixel JPEGs (2048x1500) and thousands of pictures at lower resolutions
(2 megapixel) or quality settings (higher compression). You may find that
256 MB is too much for your needs, but you will certainly find that 64 MB
will give you a *lot* more freedom for a *fraction* (1/20th) of the price of
a return ticket to the UK.

PS How does the Fuji 3800 perform in low/no light? (I seem to remember this
was a bit of a deal-breaker for me when I did my research)

<http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/fuji/finepix_3800-review/> suggests that
it performs poorly in low/no light.

Re: focussing

Hmm. Can you adjust the quality of the focus by changing to one of the more
pseudo-manual settings. My Canon A70 allows for three different focussing
settings (one of which I have yet to figure out how to use) in addition to
full-manual (not exactly easy to use but it does work for infinity or macro
shots). I find that the situation determines which focussing setting is
required (& in low light (pretty much all the time it seems here in the UK
;) it'll usually take a second or two to focus (or not at all if it's
twilight/dark and the subject is more than 3 m or 4 m away).

PS CBC radio one is coming through wonderfully clear on QT streaming over
AOHell dialup (though, it is funny to hear the 11:00 news at 4 in the
afternoon)... soon we will have high speed & I'll be able to dump this
!31%!@! hell of an ISP, AOHell (one month free, but I'm not sure if it was
worth selling my soul for one month free & of having to run the AOL
application to connect to the web)... plus, I'll be able to run CBC all the
time as I usually do :) & not have to get off the phone every once in a
while.
