Thanks to all you kind people who responded to my problem which has solved
two problems.
1. I got rid of the two copies of the "Background Picture" - wherever it
came from - using File Buddy which not only found them but allowed me to
delete them!!!

2. I can now change the Desktop Picture by changing the jpg files to PICT
files as suggested. Why the jpg files no longer do work, I do not know!! It
could be because I have multiple copies of Quicktime - my next job is to
delete them all(4.1, 4.2 and 5.x) and then reinstall one of them!! I
normally use jpg for all pictures.
