PICT is no longer a preferred format (hasn't been for years). It's a legacy
format now only supported because it was the dominant Apple picture format
for years. JPEG, TIFF or even GIF are by far the better choice for graphics
on the Mac!
As for the Desktop Picture preferences -- if your picture did work before
and not now it means that a file was corrupted. I highly doubt it was a
virus (there simply aren't that many Mac ones out there).
Run Apple's Disk First Aid (Utilities folder) and see what it says. It may
find some odd-ball quirk. You could also try running Tech Tool Lite (a free
download from <http://www.download.com>). If you have Norton Utilities run
Disk Doctor and it should catch any corrupt files.
As to converting pictures -- GraphicConverter (shareware download from
<http://www.download.com>) is your best bet.
PS To anyone with the RAM available (64 MB+) -- upgrade to OS 9.1 (and, if
your computer is a G3 or G4 with enough RAM 9.2.2 or OS X 10.1 (192 MB or
more)). OS 9 fixed many of the odd-ball quirks and serious problems that
existed in OS 8.x (_no one_ and I really mean _no one_ should be running
8.5.x or 8.0 -- upgrade to at least 8.1 or 8.6).
Eric.
