I'm not sure if I followed your procedures correctly, but you should:
1) It is recommended that you do a full backup before using Norton 
Disk Doctor and Defragmenting. (I often don't do that, but I've 
usually got recent backups.)
2) Turn off your computer next. Insert the NSW - CD (I suspect that it 
is a start-up disk isn't it?) By that I mean that it has an operating 
system on the disk.
3) Hold down the 'c' key as you press the "on" button. Wait  till you 
hear the start-up chord before releasing the 'c' key. Now you should 
be into the NSW window under the new OS (from the CD).
4) Use Disk Doctor before trying to Defrag.
