[muglo] Defragmentation, etc.

Dear Muglo Folks:
I got a virus on my Mac - which I had been told (admittedly, a while
back) was not that easy to do.
I had received a strange e-mail with the subject line "My pictures from
the party", which I did not open and immediately deleted - but shortly
after I found I could not type some of the letters for my e-mail.
It wasn't my key-board, because I checked in my word-processing
documents and there was no problem there.
Anyway, on the advice of the Mac-knowledgeable (surprise!) Sympatico
guy, I rushed out and got Norton SystemWorks, ran a virus check, and
everything seems okay.
So, the moral of my cautionary tale is this - Macs are no longer immune
to viruses.
My second concern is that I want to defragment my files, using Speed
Disk, but I don't seem to be able to. The manual says I have to start
from the Norton SystemsWorks CD or another designated disk to optimize
my Startup Disk.
How do I do that? I put the CD for NSW in my tower; clicked on it in
Control Panels - Startup - to make it the startup disk, but then what?
I am terrified that I am going to wipe out all my files.
I wish the people who write these *&^%$#@manuals could describe the
process in a straightforward, step-by-step way.
Any enlightenment on this subject would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Kathryn
