John - more details would likely help!!  What program is the file 
in, what operating system you are using e.g Appleworks 6 word 
processing file in MacOS 9.2.x etc ...

Your description sounds like you have turned off "print grid 
lines" in the spreadsheet module of AW (or similar option in 
other spreadsheets).  Am I correct?  if not add some detail to 
help in diagnosis.  You can access grid lines by doing a 
command-P (ie Print) then in the drop down menu (normally it says 
"General" choose Appleworks and it will then give you a number of 
options one of which is cell grid which is likely checked.

It's like telling your Dr. you have a headache!!
