[muglo] Re: Converting Audio Tapes to CDs

The process is relatively simple but requires a cable and some software.

The cable must have an RCA plug on one end and a mini plug on the other
to connect to your computer's 'audio in'. (You probably play your audio
tapes through a receiver which has an RCA 'audio out' socket in the
front.)

To digitize tapes or old records, I have used a Roxio program called
Spin Doctor.

I experiment. I digitize some music, adjust the volume meter to obtain
results within the required limits, stop the process and play it back.
If that sample sounds OK, I do the real thing. If the volume is not
quite up to snuff, that can easily be improved on. That copy is
uncompressed, of course.

There is another piece of software named Audacity; it is also freeware.
I use it to doctor volume and to trim useless silences at the beginning
and end of a my digitized music. Audacity saves its music in its own
format. To make it iTunes compatible, I use another freeware program,
iTuner. Audacity will allow me to save files as AIFF. If I want MP3
compression, and I do, I must have a program called LameLib, freeware.

If you need additional info, contact me.

I had an enormous collection of old, old 78s, 45s, and 33s, and I held
on to them tenaciously. And I am glad I did. I now enjoy the music
which I enjoyed many, many years ago.
