Went to renew my Norton Antivirus subscription online Monday and
decided I might as well go for the upgrade they were offering to a new
"improved" version, Norton Confidential=2E I downloaded it without
difficulty but had to delay installing it because the download process
threw up an message panel into which I was told to type a new
subscription key when I did install=2E The new key, the message panel
said, had been given me during the download process=2E No such key had
been provided=2E I held off installing and e-mailed Symantec to ask for
clarification=2E More than 36 hours later, instead of the 24 their
website promises, they replied that the key was only needed for new
subscriptions to the old program, not for the new =97 but they didn't say
why the message panel had shown up asking for it=2E

So I went ahead and installed Confidential=2E It's so bloody confidential
it won't tell even its users what it's doing=2E The installation process
tells you that the program's problem-alert function only works with
Firefox=2E So I changed my default browser from Safari, which I like, to
Firefox, which is versatile but slow to load and just as slow to quit=2E
The very first time I opened it, it showed an alert from Confidential:
"Error encountered"=2E You'd think perhaps Symantec would have included a
function that would tell you what the error was, and what to do about
it=2E You'd be wrong=2E Every time I've used Firefox since then, the same
"Error encountered" message shows up above the menu bar=2E And stays
there=2E=20

It doesn't happen with Safari at all, but there's no way to tell
whether I now have any virus protection at all while in Safari=2E

There's no reference to the "Error encountered" message -- nor to any
other error messages -- in Norton's onscreen Help file=2E Neither is
there any such thing to be found in Symantec's own website=2E There is no
way to send a message about it to their so-called support service, and
their site gives no phone line to call=2E=20

There's a link to a rebate centre, which links to a page which tells
you to click on yet another link that will take you to a refund
application page=2E And it does take you there, but every time it does,
the page crashes=2E

The download includes a printable user manual which gives no
information about use at all =97 merely about download procedures =97 and
"trouble-shooting" in the index merely refers you to a list of mailing
addresses to Symantec sites worldwide=2E With no phone numbers=2E

I finally found a link I could send an e-mail to, and fired off a
snarky complaint asking for my money back=2E This time, I got a
reasonably speedy reply giving me a phone number I could call=2E I
haven't called it yet=2E Right now I'm going to go and consult a glass of
Bushmills' best and try to regain my customary sunny disposition so I
won't start cussing somebody out over the phone to Oregon=2E I'll try
them tomorrow=2E And let you know=2E

Anybody else run into this dog's breakfast of a program=3F
