[muglo] Re: Color printers

I miss my Canon i550! My father now has it and it's doing a great job for
him.

We've got an Epson CX7800 (sold as CX7810 at FutureSlop) and, although it's
an decent scanner/copier/flash drive, it's a printer with some limitations.

Print quality is good, but it is SLOW as molasses in January and it can only
grip plain paper and glossy paper consistently. It has a tough time gripping
thick matte papers (or any type of non-standard, thicker paper, for that
matter... including envelopes).

The annoying thing is that it's rated at 22 ppm on the box but there's no
way in hell you can get 22 ppm on anything but ultra-low-resolution +
density draft. At that speed it skips every other nozzle (maybe more) and
the print is of such low quality and so faint the output is _completely_
useless.

Practically speaking it can handle 2-4 ppm. My Apple StyleWriter II (a Canon
;-) was a much faster printer (B&W only) with better paper-handling skills
and it is 11 or 12 years older than the Epson CX7800!!! Of course, the
CX7800 runs circles around it when it comes to print QUALITY.

Aside from the relative sluggishness and the annoying paper handling, it is
a really good printer-scanner-copier if you're using standard paper/glossy
paper and not in a hurry for your prints.

The print quality is excellent and the scanner is stunningly fast, making
excellent use of USB2 (I can scan full page 300 dpi grey news print in
seconds and colour is fast too). The flash drive reader is a nice bonus.

As for the Canon -- you can't go wrong with a Canon. I'm wishing I had a
Canon now, but the model I wanted was more than $150 more expensive (nearly
2x) than the Epson CX7800 so I had to go with the features I wanted at a
more palatable price.

PS both Canon and Epson (and maybe HP?) are great printers in that you can
use no-name ink cartridges. Instead of blowing $70 on an official pack of
Epson cartridges, I can order no-name ink cartridges for a third the price
(or LESS)... and, since I've already blown through two sets of cartridges
(and even more black), I've saved >$100 in 6 months!

PS2 No-name cartridges (CMYK) for the Canon IP3000 can be had for $2.99/
from piloshop.ca or $2.49/ if you order 5 or more (vs. $14.46 for Staples
brand and $17.96 for Canon).

Eric.
