you could trust an OCR program to convert the text in the documents.

Would be a good solution for the indexing. Still works quite fine in OS 9 
and Classic. However it would be using QuickTime to open the jpegs. As 
would FileMaker. If you have it though, and it can do the job, why not 
use it then?
