As a photographer of 50 years of experience and as already stated,
Optical zoom is the only criteria to consider. Digital zoom is akin to
cheating, it is an interpretation of pixels, or guesswork in order to
fool you into thinking you have taken a better photo. Many offer a SLR
equivalent. i.e.: 38 - 210 mm. The smaller figure is wide angle, 25-35
is ideal, the larger number is telephoto, the bigger the better and very
important if you are into birding, outdoor sports etc.
It is also of some considerable importance to look for a camera with a
glass lens, not plastic. There are a few, but not too many. For you, I
would also recommend carefully checking the viewfinder. Most do not have
a rubber cup and the more round your glasses, the harder it is to focus
well with a metal surround. This feature was the decider for me to buy
Fuji, now there are at least 4 good cameras that have rubber eyepieces.
