I would agree with Tee... I was told a few years back that there are
two optical "heads" in a CD/DVD drive, one for CDs and one for DVDs,
and it is quite common that one will fail while the other continues
to work flawlessly. I've had a couple of drives in various G3
Powerbooks stop reading DVDs (both data and movies) but they can
still read CDs several years later.
It sounds like it's time to replace the drive. You mights as well go
with a Superdrive while your at it. I replaced the Combo drive in my
iMac G4 with a Pioneer DVR-111D Superdrive (picked up at http://
www.ncix.com from Vancouver for about $32 CDN), and I LOVE the new
DVD burning ability!
