Doug you don't have to worry about it with your Mac, if the disks were region 
coded to a region other than region 1 the DVD Player program would have given 
you a message something like "this is a region X disk would you like to switch 
to that region. Warning you are only able to switch x more times."  This is not 
the exact message since it has been a few years since I saw it but it is the 
intent so if your son's disks played without this message the disks may not 
have had a region coding, may have had multi region coding which included 
region 1 or may have been region 1 coded disks and the problems they had 
playing them were totally unrelated.
