Easy question for you: how much disk space is free? i.e., open up a
Finder window and see how much free space your computer reports. If
it's less than 500 MB that's exactly why your G4 is slowing to a crawl
(however, it could also be that you're trying to throw too much at it
;-).

PS How much real RAM memory does your computer have?
