It seems to me that it depends on what you have these pictures do.
Also, 'freeing up some memory' should not necessarily slow down
anything unless your demand of memory is excessive so that your
computer temporarily stores virtual memory on your hard drive which,
of course, will slow down whatever you are doing.
You have in your Utilities Folder an 'Activity Monitor'. Move the
pictures to another location while you are watching that monitor.
