I suspect that "largest unused block" of 88 MB is what "About this
computer" is telling you? This is _not_ the same as free disk space.
And, if the 88 MB really is your free disk space that is your problem
-- you will need to burn some (many) files to CD and free up some disk
space.

When you do a "Get Info" on your hard disk (select the HD icon and
type command-i) you will see how much free disc space is available. If
that amount is <100 MB that certainly will cause you problems.

If you are using PhotoShop, you will need at least 500 MB free to
effectively use PhotoShop!

As for virtual memory in OS 9: you are wise to turn _on_ virtual
memory to one MB larger than your RAM total. It may seem
counter-intuitive, but turning on VM actually _frees_ up real RAM.
However, turning up the total of virtual memory much higher doesn't
help much

PS I know this isn't a political list but there are some pretty damn
