These are recommendations on installing Panther from another list. Some
basic, some obscure.
May be helpful, it's early and things are still unsettled.
Bob Weaver
First, here's Apple's take on upgrading:
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
Now, to upgrade, do this:
1) go get the latest versions of all your software via versiontracker (note
that if you don't do this, you'll be REALLY sorry, as some issues [like
running the older versions of DefaultFolder will crash your machine and
prevent you from logging in])
2) use Disk Utility to repair permissions
3) use fsck -y to verify that your disk drives are OK (see previous issues
for explanation)
4) install the files you downloaded in step one
5) backup your hard drive using (the new version of) Carbon Copy Cloner.
(see previous issues for explanation)
6) use Jaguar Cache Cleaner to deep clean the caches
7) reboot
8) install Panther (no: there's no reason to do a "clean install" if your
system is running OK after steps 1-4)
In short: prepare yourself properly... then upgrade!
Now that you're in Panther:
Notice that the "software update" is now conveniently directly in the Apple
menu.
Run it until it tells you that you're all up to date.
Next, if you have Stuffit Deluxe, then get the 8.01 updater and re-install
it.
If you've got a Palm PDA, and are having trouble getting it to sync, go to
your backup, created in step 5, above and copy and replace these files:
/Library/Application Support/Palm Hotsync and /Library/CFMSupport/Hotsync
Libraries.
FileVault seems to have some problems, and so I strongly recommend that you
DON'T use it.
I have not had any trouble with external firewire drives, but a number of
people have. What appears to be at least one common thread is that those
folks have formatted their drives with something other than Apple's Drive
Utility.
Upshot? This is the best OS update I've ever seen. As usual: gird thy loins.
Your milage may vary...

Panther hint. They moved some of the features of the top bar of Jaguar
windows to the new sidebar. You can display or hide the sidebar by
double-clicking on the little dot.

What about all those reports of trouble?
Anecdotal reports of things not working under Panther are just that:
anecdotal. Single events from single users. You want to watch for single
events from _multiple_ users.
For example, on my machine:
Eudora 6 sends mail just fine;
SnapZ Pro works correctly;
Dymo labeler is functioning as it always has;
Airport is functioning;
my Epson 2200 prints just fine (reader may have to install the special
borderless printing update from Epson again)
my local network is responding just fine;
expose works;
all 9 of my external firewire drives are working, as is my USB midi;
firewire ROM reader; Motu 828...
... and every one of these was reported as a problem/failure of Panther
However, I've had a spate of friends say "You upgraded!!?? Are you crazy?
Haven't you seen all the reports about the horrible problems with Panther."
I'd wager that the "real" issues are fileVault; some (but certainly not all)
firewire drives (usually those initialized by third party formatters); and
perhaps one or two others...
I'd attribute the remaining 90% to issues on the individual user's machine.
That said, it's also true that "you pays your nickel; you takes your
chances..."
