Running OS X on a clone, and on an unsupported configuration at that (pre-G3
mobo) caused all your install headaches. I just pop-in the CD and click
Install. Never have had to do anything different.
As for going back to a 'clean slate', you can do it in at least one way:
create a second 'admin level' account. Turn off auto-login. Restart into OS
9. Delete your own folder in the ~/Users/ directory, and, voila,
_everything_ that is OS X-specific and contains sensitive information is
gone, and your OS is cleared.
Only if you save files in other locations on your HD will sensitive
information persist (but OS X won't allow you to save in the OS hierarchy
itself so everything is in easy to find places).
That is redundant. If you can control access to your computer you can allow
only OS X booting (requires New World FirmWare... starting with the Pismo &
the Yikes G4)... then you don't have to worry about anything until someone
figures out they can bypass your security by resetting the power manager in
the laptop, or hitting the CUDA switch on a tower, and then they can pop in
a CD to boot into an insecure mode).
