Muglo Computer History
The Macintosh User Group of London, Ontario (MUGLO) was started by
Brian Wiltshire. I was walking around what was then Treasure Island
Shopping Center in 1991 and spotted a computer group booth. Brian
Wiltshire was there and there was also a woman. They were soliciting
members for the new computer club. I decided since there was a woman
involved it couldn't be all male chauvinists at this club! (I later
learned it was Susan Dunbar.)
The first meeting was on Monday, Sept 23, 1991 at 7:00 pm at the W&A
Computer Training Centre at 45 Oxford Street West.
This was an organizational meeting. MUGLO had just applied for
certification by Apple Canada as an official Macintosh user group. I
was at that meeting as was my husband Ralph and I believe, Barry
Takayesu.
Doug Harrison published Volume 1 Issue 1 of the MUGLO newsletter in Nov
1992. It was immensely popular. At that time we had outgrown Brian's
office and the occasional meeting at UWO and graduated to CFPL, then to
Central Secondary School in July 1993.
Ralph became treasurer in Feb 1993, the first election that was held. I
became disc librarian in March 1993. I loved that job!
Brian Wiltshire became the past president (although he had not ever
been president) but because he had devoted so much time to the club.
Brian received a surprise award with the title of "Founding Member" on
Jan 4, 1994, presented by Larry Kryski.
Brian was recognized for and I quote "the efforts that he made in
starting the club in September 1991, as the result of collaboration
with Susan Dunbar, an early club member, whom he credits with being the
catalyst for his efforts. He says Susan had raised the issue of a club
on the now extinct, Wonderland BBS. Brian responded to her query,
ultimately resulting in the formation of MUGLO."
The newsletter goes on to say that "MUGLO was preceded by the now
defunct London Macintosh Users Group, LMUG, of which Brian was also a
member."
The MUGLO logo contest in the summer of 1993 was won by none other than
Barry Takayesu.
Paul Thomas became secretary in Jan 1994.
This is a brief history of our roots. (documentation available upon
