Many thanks for your prompt reply.

I should have mentioned: My main drive is "C" and my removable HD is "D."

 This does sound like a logical answer, but everything appears to be in
order in the Computer Management window, except for the free space shown,
which should be about ten gigs more.

Oh well, back to the drawing-board.
