Well no other lawyers I know use it, although they use virtually all the
other features of Outlook. I do see how they were targeting lawyers
with the logic of it, but I just found it, like you, to be unwieldy and
a huge drain on resources. There are far more efficient time-tracking
packages out there, although I am not in love with any of them.
That being said, I do not practice law myself, nor really aspire to. I
work mostly as a network admin/infrastructure engineer and/or MIS
manager over the past 12 years. Obviously my law degree helps in some
ways when I work for law firms as a computer consultant of one kind or
another as it is also a graduate/doctorate degree (a JD is a juris
doctor).
If I may further digress, I think it would actually be very interesting
yet hopefully still on-topic to ask how people on the list make their
living.
Since I was asked, I am, as I believe I mentioned to a few of you in
private messages before, consolidating my technology businesses (in
which I do mostly hosting, site maintenance and teaching since I do work
as a computer science professor at two universities part-time here in
NYC) to one where I offer both legal consulting and technology
consulting. I'm exploring that niche that people have said I should
pursue since I have these two backgrounds in my career. As the economy
has been challenging in the last few years (and I have many political
theories as a PoliSci major for what I think caused it), I've forced
myself to be creative in how to build a business. Being my own boss was
one major reason why I went to law school in the first place, although
traditional practice just does not appeal to me at this time nor I doubt
in the foreseeable future. As I always say, I went to law school at
night, so I already had a "day job" and a career, like many of my peers.
I was fortunate to be successful with my computer consulting through the
time that I graduated to the extent that dropping it to start over as a
first-year attorney would not have been prudent. We'll see what the
future holds. Thank you for inquiring.
