I know what you mean, Larry, and it is not limited to merge-type  fields. I 
think your issue has to do with the fact that the  underlines for text do not 
line up with the underscore "_" character.  So if you are using that character 
for the portion before and after the merge  fields, that is the reason. The 
fix is to use underlined spaces  instead.
