hmmm - all i can add is to repeat the borders and shading = none. sometimes 
it takes a few attempts to get rid of them. if they are drawn with the 
drawing toolbar, you can select them and press Delete (they will get handles 
at either end).

you could also try edit mode in Print Preview and see if you can select and 
delete them that way.

Thank you for your suggestion.  I went through the entire doc and managed to
get rid of 6 of the lines using the Borders and Shading.  There are still 4
lines that refuse to go away though.  I can move them up and down the page
by using the enter and del keys but that is all.  When I reveal formatting
there is a paragraph symbol at the beginning of the line but I can't get rid
of that either.
