Another possibility is that the files are using a font you don't have since
your crash. Try highlighting all of the data and changing the font to see
if that fixes your problem. Otherwise, I'm afraid your docs may have gotten
corrupted in the crash.

And was there an option for Word 2003 files?
Well, I suppose anything is possible with the recovery, but the mention of
"little boxes" tells me you have data, but data that Office 2007 doesn't
understand.
If you have a non-confidential file that you would like to send me as an
example, I can try opening it with Office 2003 (but I won't be able to do
that
until about 8pm Eastern).
