I bought my 4 year old son a bicycle. It has two big wheels, plus some
little wheels at the back to stop him falling over. Here in the UK, we
call these 'stabilisers'. I'm really happy about those little wheels,
because in most cases they stop him getting hurt, and they also mean
that my wife and I don't have to spend time and worry just because he
wants to be mobile and get some exercise.
One day he'll want to take those stabilisers off. He'll have to come to
me or his mother and ask us to take them off for him, because he doesn't
know how to use the spanner ('wrench' to you colonials) to do it
himself. Before we do so, we'll sit him down and talk about the
consequences, including the increased probability of getting hurt, and
the need for him to look out for himself. Then we'll take them off, and
he'll ride his bike like a big boy.
The people who make the bikes have been supplying them with these
stabilisers fitted for many years now. Of course, there are kids of 4
who have already leaned to ride without stabilisers, but the bikes that
are their size all come with stabilisers fitted anyway. But that's OK,
because it's easy to take them off if you know what you're doing. It
seems to be the best of both worlds. The manufacturers are taking a
responsible position in protecting the consumers and their families and
the other people affected, e.g. road and pavement ('sidewalk') users who
would otherwise be at greater risk. The educated consumer has an easy
way to release fuller functionality if he thinks that's the right thing
to do.
I'm a big fan of Microsoft software, but I'm also critical when they get
things wrong. I really don't think this is one of those times. I am
delighted that Outlook comes with stabilisers.
