The Alt-x technique has never worked for me in Word 2000.

I suggest you try Character Map, a standard Windows utility. If it's not
on your Start menu, search for charmap.exe, maybe in
C:\windows\system32.

Once you open Character Map, you can enter "care of" in the Search For
box, and if it's in the selected font, you'll see it. Then you can
Select it, Copy it, and paste it into your Word document.
