As far as Linda's problem is concerned, I have the same problem but what I
have found is happening on my laptop is that my thumb is resting near the
touchpad and it will occasionally move the cursor. That can put you
someplace else and it may or may not be typable but it is definitely not
where I want the cursor to be.
As far as the missing cursor, MSWord will cause the cursor to disappear
while you are typing. This is done to remove the distraction of the word
cursor and the pointing cursor. It will return when you move the cursor
with your mouse or touchpad. As far as the typing not working, I am
guessing that is a matter of focus. Good luck. BUD

Also, to add to what Dave says ... Are you ABSOLUTELY sure it's only
happening in Word? Cuz this happens to me too, on my laptop, but it's not
just in Word ... It happens in email and other programs too. In my case,
it's not that the program is losing focus ... It's some key I am
accidentally hitting that moves my cursor to another location, so sometimes
I end up typing in the wrong place, and other times I can't type at all
because my cursor has moved to an "untypable" place.
It's really weird and I really wish I knew what key or key combo I was
hitting by accident, cuz it's REALLY frustrating!

Next time you're typing and nothing's happening, look at the screen before
you try the click. Is the bar at the top of the window the bright colour
(indicating the window has focus) or the light colour (indicating something
else has taken the focus)?
My suspicion is that something else is popping up momentarily and grabbing
the focus, then going away and leaving the focus indeterminate,
Does it happen when nothing else is running in the machine? Are there any
scheduled events in the machine that might be running frequently? Are there
any resident programs (e.g. chat) that might be grabbing the machine for a
moment?
Also: what version of Word? What operating system?
