[mso] Re: case of the missing cursor

Hi Linda,

A customer previously reported a similar problem at our helpdesk, where
the cursor would do crazy things in particular when typing. His PC was
also a laptop. Usually erratic mouse movement is either caused by the
Pointing Stick or the Palmrest.=20
To isolate the problem, you could try the following:
1) Remove external keyboard and mouse from the system (if
any)
2) Power on computer=20
3) Click on Start - Control Panel=20
4) Double Click on Mouse=20
5) Disable Device on Pointing Stick =20
If after following those steps the cursor stops being weird, then the
Pointing Stick is probably faulty and needs replacing.

Kind regards,

Also, to add to what Dave says ... Are you ABSOLUTELY sure it's only
happening in Word? Cuz this happens to me too, on my laptop, but it's
not just in Word ... It happens in email and other programs too. In my
case, it's not that the program is losing focus ... It's some key I am
accidentally hitting that moves my cursor to another location, so
sometimes I end up typing in the wrong place, and other times I can't
type at all because my cursor has moved to an "untypable" place.

It's really weird and I really wish I knew what key or key combo I was
hitting by accident, cuz it's REALLY frustrating!=20

Next time you're typing and nothing's happening, look at the screen
before you try the click. Is the bar at the top of the window the
bright colour (indicating the window has focus) or the light colour
(indicating something else has taken the focus)?

My suspicion is that something else is popping up momentarily and
grabbing the focus, then going away and leaving the focus indeterminate,

Does it happen when nothing else is running in the machine? Are there
any scheduled events in the machine that might be running frequently?
Are there

any resident programs (e.g. chat) that might be grabbing the machine for
a moment?

Also: what version of Word? What operating system?

Regards, Dave S
