[mso] Re: case of the missing cursor

Under WinXP Pro SP-2 (probably other flavors too) there is a registry
settingthat is supposed to prevent other applications from stealing the
'focus'. If you have 'administrator' permissions to this computer, the
easiest way to access it is to download the MS program 'tweakui' and look
under the General->focus tab. This is available from:
http://tinyurl.com/ui18[1] (the Microsoft download site.)

This option will set a flag that will prevent other 'normal' programs from
interrupting a running program by grabbing the 'hooks' to the keyboard or
mouse. If you install this and click on the option and you are still
havingproblems then I would suspect that something is fishy with this
computer. It may be innocent but it should be checked out. As an aside...
Ipresume that if you are only working one day a week that someone else is
using it the other days? If so then one of these other users may have
installed some software that might have caused this problem.

Another possible problem that has symptoms like you describe can be caused
bysome cheap wireless keyboards. They have a power saving feature in them
that shuts down the electronics in the keyboard (to save the battery) if
there is no key-click in a given period of time. When these keyboards
misbehave they will seem to drop keystrokes.

Good Luck

Windows, the one with the focus will have a different coloured top bar to
allthe other windows. On my computer, this is a bright blue compared to a
faded blue on the other windows. Switching focus is usually done with the
mouse. For Windows, you actually need to click somewhere in the window to
change the focus. (For Unix, simply hovering the mouse pointer over a Window
will give that window the focus. But I don't think you can do that in
Windows.) Another way to switch window focus is Alt-Tab or Alt-Shift-Tab.
With older versions of Word (Office 97 and below) I think you can also swap
between your open Word documents with Ctrl-Tab and Ctrl-Shift-Tab. A window
that loses the focus does not disappear from the screen (unless it's
obscuredby the window that now has the focus, of course, when it's still
there, but underneath). What version of Word are you using? The way Word
handles windows changed significantly with Word 2000. Regards, Dave S -----

Re: case of the missing cursor O.K., now I am confused. What do you all mean
by 'focus'? I have noticed the last day I was at work (I only work one day a
week (volunteer job) that if I have two documents open and I am not working
on either document but am talking to my boss, the computer will suddenly
shutdown one document and open the other one.) Is that what focus is? Are
youthinking that the computer has stopped focusing on the document that I am
working on and has 'focused' on another document that I have open? WOW, you
just might have something there!!!! I work in an Art Gallery and have been
moving 'sold' art work from a document called current inventory to another
file called inventory archives. Then I might start a new document to write a
letter to one of our artists. Sometimes I might have three or four documents
open at the same time. Interesting, very interesting. If this is the case,
does this mean that to fix the problem, I should just have only one document
open at one time? Sounds WAY too easy! :o) I will not be going to work again
till this Thursday but will keep you posted. Sounds like the most promising
thing so far, although . . . Diana
