Only one window will have the "focus" at any time. In Windows, the one with
the focus will have a different coloured top bar to all the other windows.
On my computer, this is a bright blue compared to a faded blue on the other
windows.
Switching focus is usually done with the mouse. For Windows, you actually
need to click somewhere in the window to change the focus. (For Unix,
simply hovering the mouse pointer over a Window will give that window the
focus. But I don't think you can do that in Windows.) Another way to
switch window focus is Alt-Tab or Alt-Shift-Tab. With older versions of
Word (Office 97 and below) I think you can also swap between your open Word
documents with Ctrl-Tab and Ctrl-Shift-Tab.
A window that loses the focus does not disappear from the screen (unless
it's obscured by the window that now has the focus, of course, when it's
still there, but underneath).
What version of Word are you using? The way Word handles windows changed
significantly with Word 2000.
