The easy way to add a border or background to a Word doc is to select Header
and in the header add a Rectangle which you can locate anywhere and stretch to
any size you want, including full page. Then for something like neat
stationary choose to Format the Autoshape (Rectangle) and for Fill select a
Fill Effect such as a gradient or texture. Or if you only want a border then
set the Fill to None and choose a color and even a pattern for the Line
(border) and set the width of the border.
Choosing only a border and making the size of the rectangle to be only 1/2 of a
page will solve the orignal question from Elise. Then the text can be entered
as normal, formated in any designed manner, within what appears to be a box
without using a text box itself.

a book cover. I made a table that had 3
rows and 3 columns. I put a jpg image in each of the 4 corner cells then
merged the three cells in the center row. I then put a text box in each of
the cells so that I could put in colored backgrounds. I have found that if
you put a background into a word doc whether it be image or color word
automatically switches to web page mode which is a HUGE annoyance to me. The
workaround I came up with was using text boxes and putting backgrounds in
them. If anyone knows how to put a background in a word document without it
changing to a web page I would love to hear about it.
