[mso] Word2003 Letters & Mailing: Bad Rendering of Some Punctuation

Hi All,
In answer to a different question, Linda said, "Read the footer of every email
you get from this group .. there's a link to
fix the extra stuff you see in your emails". I have a question that may be
related. Word doesn't send extra characters, but it does send inappropriate
ones in place of some punctuation.
My question is whether a fix can be made to Word2003 so that it sends
appropriate characters when I use Word2003 with Tools | Letters & Mailing to
send emails. Specifically, quotes, apostrophes and probably other punctuation
characters come through as little empty rectangles when the email is read as
text only. We send three or four emails on average every month to 150 members
of a private club. Recipients use all manner of email clients to read these
emails. There is no way to require everyone to use Outlook, therefore, I'm
looking for a way to solve the problem at the sending end rather than at the
receivers.
Thanks for the help.
Ray Shapp
