Both worked perfectly on mine. However, it's the key sequence, not the
text, that's important.
The -- is converted to a dash quite a long time after you type it ...
1915 -- 2008
still has the double hyphen, then type the colon (or whitespace or
full-stop). The conversion is done when you type the next (non
alphanumeric) thing to the right of the 2008.
The 7th
still has the non-subscripted th. Then type the space. The conversion is
done when you type the thing to the right of the "th".
To get a dash (or dash pair) converted, put a space to the right of the
following word. Then delete it again if you don't want it. I.e. if you
have "1915 -- 2008 something else" and the hyphens haven't converted, type a
space immediately to the right of the 8, then delete one of the unwanted
spaces.
