That isn't really a very good option. Apart from the  fact that it is  
burdensome, one example the questioner gave - converting the "th" of an ordinal 
 
number is actually changing it to a superscript, and search and replace can't 
do  
that.
 
I am not actually a fan of auto-correct, since I don't want Microsoft in  
their wisdom to tell me what I mean. But I suspect that you are simple running  
up against the arcane rules in the "engine" that have decided - for whatever  
reason - that the autocorrection doesn't apply in that particular case.
 
Could you give us an example of a fragment of text that you typed and that  
did not autocorrect?
