I saw your post, but have no idea...so I didn't bother answering in the
hopes that someone who might have experienced this had a club.
I've never seen this problem. And checking with other Word MVPs, they
haven't either. So it's obviously not something common with any type of
typical fix.
That means you have some troubleshooting to do to try to drill down your
problem.
Since it's not printing the first lines after a certain point...the first
thing you need to check is to verify that content does exist in that
position...ARE THERE first names in those records in the DB?
Assuming yes, then you have to consider that it is a memory problem.
Rebooting is good...but did you also clear your TEMP folder? Then reboot and
see if that helps.
Then...if that doesn't work, it could be that the data is getting
lost...after a certain point...and not properly being sent to the printer.
Data SPOOLS to printers. Think of it like a long line of data feeding into
the printer. If there are memory problems...or if the spooling timer isn't
high enough...a slower computer or network might have to "catch it's breath"
to continue working as it gets more and more data. This could cause a
"hiccup" in the data transfer as each new label starts...thus causing the
beginning data to fall into a black hole. Granted, I've never seen THIS TYPE
of problem under that circumstance...but I have, many times, seem similar
issues, such as graphics printing out like postage stamps or jobs starting
and getting LOST into a black hole and never finishing. It's because the
spool isn't set high enough for the time it takes for the data to get to the
printer. These types of problems are more rare with better
equipment/software...but it could still be a possibility, depending on your
situation. So I would go into the printer drive properties and see if you
can up the spooler. If you're printing through a network, check with your
admin about the job.
If not...then you need to try other things to try to find the problem...have
you tried printing them from a different computer? A different version of
Word? To a different Printer? Have you updated the print driver? Have you
tried a different version of your printer's driver? If you're printing
through a network, can you connect a printer directly to your system to see
if that helps? Try turning off background printing in Word (Tools > Options
> Print) and see if that helps.
Try these tests to see if you can narrow down the problem device. You may
not have the equipment for all that testing...but you need to find the
culprit, so you'll need to do some of this type of testing if you want to
solve the problem.
Good luck!

Subject: [mso] Word will not print labels correctly.
I posted my problem yesterday & since I haven't seen a reference to it, I
thought I would try it again as I have a deadline to get these labels
completed. I use XP with Word 2002.
For a few hours yesterday the labels were being printed just fine. But for
no apparent reason, it just decided to stop printing 3 (name, address,
city, state)lines in the label & will only print 2. It omits the line where
the name is displayed, rendering the labels unusable. The first thing I did
was reboot, hoping that it was a quirk that would go away with the shutting
down of the computer. Rebooting did not help.
I was uncertain whether this is a Word problem or a printer problem. I
printed two-sided brochures with no problem so I think it must be with Word.
Another strange thing is that it will print 3 lines on an envelope...but not
the labels.
Any guidance you can offer would be very appreciated.
Thanks
Jan
