From the Tools menu, choose Options and select the General tab. You'll
find a check box towards the bottom labelled "Automatically create
drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes" - uncheck it.

Well, yes, they could. It's in Word 2002 and it's the automatic drawing
canvas Word tries to insert every time you want to insert a shape or
box.

Fortunately, this 'feature' is a lot easier to kill than Clippy used to
be.

OK, I'm waiting for you to tell us how to kill this fascinating new
feature.....;)
