[mso] Re: Word 2000 Inventing character?

Robert,

An interesting concept!

As far as I can see there would be at least two workable ways of doing this.

1) Create a small GIF file (perhaps by scanning from the original document)
which could then be inserted as an inline graphic in the document. It would
be possible, I think, to create a macro to insert a specified file at the
insertion point and then to assign a hot key to the macro.

2) [Not really an Office solution] Use a Font Design/Creation program to
create the logogram as a TrueType font character, or as an addition to your
chosen font. My brother published a definitive work on Gesture, which he
produced as a print-ready document on Word for Mac. He produced his own
font to depict the gestures he was illustrating. He told me that this was a
relatively simple task on the Mac but I believe there are a number of good
font editing programs available for Windows - a few of which are freeware or
shareware. Some of them will produce a character based on a scanned image.

A third way (again using a macro, perhaps) would be to use normal fonts. If
you were, for example, using 12pt type you might try 12pt superscript 'a' +
6pt normal 'n' + 12pt subscript 'd'.

Finally, you could try using WordArt to create the logogram. I would think
that that might be the fiddliest method of all!

Subject: [mso] Word 2000 Inventing character?

I am transcribing some old wills and have noticed the word "and" is always
spelled starting at the superscript area, and slants downward at 45 degrees.
Is possible to make a symbol to represent this word? I wish I could include
a picture, but it looks like the writers of these wills turn the page 45
degrees and simply wrote "and" with the letters closer together. I counted
192 of these occurrences and would appreciate an easy to represent that if
possible.

Thank you.

Robert
