Just a guess, but it sounds like you've got field shading
on. Trying going to tools, options, and on the view tab,
look for field shading. You should have 3 options, always,
never and when selected. Trying changing it to never.

I have a problem with my word 2000. When I insert page
numbers for any=20
documents that I am creating, the numbers show up with a
gray background and=20
the number is a lighter gray. When I print the document it
comes out normal.=20
The problem I have with this gray background around the page
number is it is=20
very hard to read the page number. I did not have this
problem before and I=20
am wondering what could I have done to cause this and what
can I do to=20
change it back to what I used to be. Please any help will be
appreciated.
