[mso] Re: What causes Run-time Errors?

Linda, et al...

FYI...Before time is wasted moving around stuff in the startup, or anywhere
else for that matter, I've suggested the /a switch because that DOES stop
anything in the startup from being included into the program. By using this
switch, you can usually, easily decipher where the problem lies without
spending time moving files around. If the /a switch works, THEN you go find
out which one is the problem, because then you can be fairly sure that the
cause is from an addin template containing code which is causing a conflict.

If the switch doesn't make a difference, then the answer usually lies with
the normal.dot, by either containing a corrupt macro, being corrupt in some
other way, or containing a virus macro.

So before folks spend time moving around files, it's best to figure out
which end of the horse is sick.

The /a switch doesn't check macros. It's stops any 3rd party items from
being included with the program and thereby narrows down whether the issue
is within the normal.dot (part of the program) or an added file.

Also...along with Dian's instructions to try the /a switch and check
your macros (runtime errors are usually caused by macros, in my
experience)....but the other thing I would check is your Word Startup
folder....search your hard drive for startup...you will find it...see
what's in there and try moving everything out of there and then put them
back one at a time until you find the culprit (same with the
macros....take em all out and put em back one at a time)...eventually
you *should* figure out what's up hopefully

Good luck

Well...there very well could be some old code that now longer works.
Especially if you recently upgraded to a new version of Word and are
using
dots from the old version. If the person who wrote the code used
anything
that could have changed, it'll no longer work.

You could go to Tools/Macro/Macro and see what you have in there. But if
you
don't know EXACTLY what SHOULD/SHOULD NOT be in there for the company
and/or
know how to write code, it might be like my daughter looking under the
hood
of her car...Yup, that's an engine alright!<g>

Yikes!!! I just realized I'm an idiot and didn't give you the most
important
line! I just told you to run winword.exe and hit enter right!<sigh> (The
next teenager who interrupts me while I'm replying get
grounded<g>)...you
need to add the /a switch to stop the addins. Just checked your earlier
post
and realized I forgot the most important part!<sigh>

HERE is what you need to type!

In the Start/Run dialog type: winword.exe /a THEN hit enter!

The /a switch stops all addins from running. So you were only typing the
main code. You HAVE TO add that switch. Sorry...I'm in the middle of a
project and not thinking about some things clearly...I've got the 90
mile
code stare!<g>
