On further thought, I bet there's something in the AutoCorrect settings
which is causing this. Hyphenation itself is probably a complete red
herring!

What about CTRL + insert optional hyphen where word appears as one word - I
am not sure this is what you were looking for. But you would replace the
hyphen with the optional hyphen.
Just an idea.
