I know how to do this in Word when forms are locked...by using Word VBA code
to process the spell check through coded unlocking/relocking of the form and
calling the spell checker within the procedure. My guess is you can do the
same type of process with Excel.

Unfortunately, I'm not all that great with Excel's object model to know how
to pull this off in Excel. But you might try posting to my Excel VBA group,
or the free Microsoft Newsgroups...under the Excel programming group.
Someone in one of those groups might have code for this they can share.

You'll find these groups listed here:

Good luck...

Subject: [mso] Spell Check in Excel

I have created an Excel worksheet for others to use and add text and budget
numbers to. I have protected cells with formulas so that they will not be
inadvertantly changed.

The problem is that users cannot spell check the worksheet since I have it
protected. I understand why they should not be able to check and change
cells that are protected, but I would like for them to be able to spell
check the entries that they have made.

Does anyone know a way that I can check or uncheck something when I protect
the sheet to allow this? (I have tried several things but spell check was
always greyed out when the sheet is protected.)

Thank you!
