[mso] Some Symbols Force Double Spacing

To All,
In Word 2003 SP3 documents, sometimes when I construct math formulae using
symbols inserted from the WP Greek Century font style or from WP Math A, the
symbol insists on appearing as double spaced. That is, the correct symbol
appears, and it is of the correct size, but it takes up two vertical lines. I
can't render an example here in plain text, but as an approximation, let's say
my goal is to write the letters "a" and "b" with the Greek letter delta
between them. In the following, I am using "x" to represent delta:
a b
x
This problem doesn't always occur, but when it does, the only work-around is
to select the desired font style then use the Alt key with the numeric keypad
to enter the desired symbol. There must be a better way!
What's causing the double spacing, and how can I prevent it? I have tried to
avoid the problem by removing all formatting, but the Styles and Formatting
window doesn't provide the option for "Remove all formatting".
Thanks for the help.
