You can highlight the cells you wish to merge and then type: Alt+O, E, A
(if the alignment tab isn't already up), Alt+M. It's not that short a
shortcut, but if you like to type (and I do), it's shorter than moving the
cursor around. If that's not short enough, you could record a macro for
it.
